Week 2, Guided Reading "Bad Dog Ben" - Phonics Phase 3 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
The second week of the Phase 3 phonics programme features a guided reading session with "Bad Dog Ben and the Jam," a story designed to help young readers develop their comprehension skills. The session includes a set of comprehension questions that encourage children to think critically about the story. These questions ask about the blurb on the back of the book, what Mum is cooking, whether both Pip and Ben can have some jam, and invite the children to guess the flavour of the jam based on the story's context. Children are also prompted to observe the illustrations to interpret Ben's desire for jam and to consider the emotions of the characters on the last page.
To further engage with the story, bonus questions are provided to connect the children's personal experiences with the narrative, such as their preference for jam flavours and reflections on sharing and fairness. The activities accompanying the guided reading include word match flashcards to reinforce vocabulary, a worksheet for drawing and writing about one of the characters, and quiet reading time. These activities aim to enhance the children's phonics knowledge, reading fluency, and understanding of the story's content in a fun and interactive way.
